Ongoing Projects

With a goal of aiming high, we will actively need students to be involved in the research process. On this page, you’ll see a breakdown of the projects we are working towards, questions for which we seek answers, and activities or events that we will be spearheading. If you would like to get involved, please check out our hiring page to volunteer or be hired as an associate for the office.

Re-learning how to project images and videos onto Storke Tower

In years prior, UCSB students used to decorate Storke Tower with tutus, banners, and extra decorations. At some point, students could even project images and videos onto the concrete sides of the building. The office will be analyzing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) restrictions and campus policies to investigate how to enable students to once again be able to do this fun activity.

The Blue and Gold Project: A study on police-student interactions in Isla Vista

The general story of Isla Vista is that it is a cesspool of sheriff deputies overpolicing university college students. By collecting resident testimony, analyzing legal policy, and working with student leaders, this culmination of efforts is intended to tackle the problem of unsupervised policing tendencies in Isla Vista. The office will be engaging in data collection, gathering grievances, and analyzing local and state policy.

Figuring out how student fees are being processed and collected using the lock-in fee mechanism

Even among elected student leaders, the financial mechanism known as the “lock-in fee” is still generally misrepresented and misunderstood. In the field of chemistry, a “reaction mechanism” is the exact road map by which molecules interact, react, and become new products. In this way, we seek to identify elucidate the mechanism that creates, perpetuates, and enacts lock-in fees for the entire student body.

An initiative to make the motion detector light tunnel, “Hesperus is Phosphorus” (among other names), a permanent light installation

Created one year following the May 23, 2014 massacre as a memorial to honor the victims, the Pardall Light Tunnel is now almost a decade old. Following the 10-year memorial effort, a group of student leaders are inspired to work towards making the bike tunnel a permanent light fixture, with color-changing lights and guaranteed maintenance. The office is helping with the initiative by researching legal aspects related to the plan, such as construction fees, permits, and other forms of review.

Analyzing building schematics for a new generation of UCSB students to construct.

A personal project of the Attorney General, the goal is to analyze previous and present attempts at constructing a new building intended to house UCSB student organizations. For years, students have met with their clubs in crowded rooms, rehearsed their music in parking lots, and been forced to pray under staircases. A building truly designed by students, for students, for their purposes and their agencies, is a must have for UCSB’s long range development plan.

Revisiting previous and current strategic vision plans

The endless process of review and revise is highly valued in Associated Students. For many years, executive officers have set aside funding for researching what the generic UCSB student wants out of the Associated Students. Because of the high turnover rate of the Association, it is rare for students to revisit or even remember what the current plan has in store for us. This project aims to reintegrate all goals under one banner, and seeks to implement them before Spring Quarter 2025.

AquaGuard: A Water Quality Control Project

AquaGuard is a pilot initiative led by the Attorney General’s office this year to sample and test the water quality in Isla Vista. Collaborating with local partners, we are highly interested in providing up-to-date information on the water quality for Isla Vista residents. We are interested in analyzing historical data associated with possible encounters with poor water quality, and building an arsenal of research that will preempt students in case of pathogenic contagion vectors caused by poor waterline infrastructure.

Enhancing the Student Employee status under Associated Students

Currently, Student Employees assigned to the Associated Students department are part-time workers who benefit from UC Policy that enables them to earn an hourly wage. A goal of the Office this year is to prioritize the wage-earner position in Associated Students as a cornerstone of future development. By increasing the number of wage-earning positions in the Association, as well as amenities associated with such positions, A.S. will be able to better accomplish its strategic goals of providing an exceptional qualities of service through equitable spending initiatives.

Rules and Administration Subcommittee: Implementing the Learning Management System (LMS)

Every year, students cite lack of trainings as a reason to explain poor accessibility and event quality in the Association. Not only do trainings arm students with the necessary tools needed to excel in their positions and provide higher quality service to their peers, trainings can help prevent problems before they arise. A goal of the Office this year is to implement the learning management system that previous administration’s have developed over many years.
